"Clean Air" subsidy program

18.04.2023

Replacement of window and door frames means savings on heating bills in the first winter, which in the current situation is a significant cost to the household budget. If we combine this with the insulation of external walls, the effect can significantly exceed 50% of the expenditure.

Currently in our country there are several programs at the local and central level, guaranteeing subsidies for part of the cost of thermomodernization or serious tax breaks. It is worthwhile to analyze the possibilities and save on the investment of replacing windows and doors at the outset, which can be combined with other renovation measures. Analysis of options for thermomodernization of a single-family building.
made with Selena products and systems.

Prepared by: WIELITERM Authorized Energy Auditor, September 2022

For the purpose of the following analyses and simulations, it was assumed that they will be carried out on the example of an existing building in which the Owners are considering various options for thermomodernization.

The building that is the subject of the following analysis is a single-family building built in the 1960s, located in Krakow. It is made in traditional masonry technology with concrete block, so-called "hasi", and solid brick. The ventilated ceiling, the supporting structure for the asphalt paper covering is made of reinforced concrete trough slabs supported on openwork walls. Wooden window and door woodwork.

The building is heated using a solid fuel boiler in which coal is burned. The boiler also operates for the preparation of domestic hot water. The circulating and charging pumps for the hot water storage tank are supplied with electricity from the power grid.

Ventilation in the building is gravitational, with air exhaust through ventilation ducts in the chimneys.

The body of the building is shown below.

Analysis of heating and hot water preparation costs was made assuming energy costs: PLN 3000/ton of coal and PLN 1.00 per kWh of electricity.

For the purpose of in-depth analysis and presentation of individual possibilities of improvement, thermomodernization of the building is presented in 3 separate variants:

variant 1 assumes that the building's ceiling, floor on the ground, and exterior walls are currently insulated to the standards specified in WT2021, and thermomodernization consists of replacing window and door frames with new ones with a U=0.9 W/m2K transfer coefficient for windows and U=1.3 W/m2K for doors. The work will also result in a significant improvement in the airtightness of the building (it is assumed to achieve airtightness n50=0.6). Obtaining this effect is due to the installation of carpentry with the complete WINS FLEX system, and will also require docking of other elements in the building (in particular, installation passages).

As a result of the above work, the effects were obtained as follows:

Variant 2 assumes that the building's ceiling and floor on the ground are currently insulated to the standards specified in WT2021, windows and doors also meet the WT2021 standard, furthermore, the building's airtightness is assumed to be n50=0.6, and thermo-modernization consists of insulating the exterior walls to the standard specified in WT2021.

As a result of the above work, the results are as follows:

Note: since the exterior walls in the existing state are uninsulated and made of materials with high thermal conductivity (and the surface area of the walls is significant in relation to the other partitions), the insulation of this partition gives very large energy savings in percentage terms.

As a result of the above work, the results are as follows:

Thermomodernization of the building, in addition to tangible financial and environmental benefits, also allows you to improve the appearance of the building.

THE IMPROVABLE METHOD Can window installation or replacement be further accelerated, simplified and, at the same time, eliminate the possibility of mistakes? And, in addition, in the face of rising prices of natural resources, as well as the trend of caring for the environment, save even more energy in the building? Yes!

How does the WINS system work?

Windows and doors, in addition to functional and aesthetic features, should meet the basic requirements for thermal protection of buildings, and therefore have high thermal insulation and air-tightness. The selection, arrangement and proper installation of joinery is one of the most important elements of the process of designing and erecting energy-efficient buildings.
